Peter and I talk about that FUCKING 5 Under 35 List all the time hahaha....ooohh I so felt this one, Erika. I actually have a substack about rejection in my drafts rn. As we texted about, it's all just a shitty part of the process. But I really am interested in what you're getting at with "clawing" and the pros and cons of it. I've been thinking about that concept lately too (I've been calling it clinging but clawing really is more visceral and maybe more true) because I am so hard at work on surrendering. It's an odd balance, to surrender but at the same time, work really fucking hard. I still am not sure about when clawing is a strength (tenacity!) and when is it a futile control tactic. But I do know for sure that there is a lot of life left in your memoir, and no matter what happens with it, it will never, ever be the mistake of your life. It has given you the gift of understanding and compassion, and it's made you a better writer along the way. nothing can take that away from you <3
